To import ALL files in a folder (including sub-folders go

| File | Import Photos |

On the left pane under Source click the little triangle by the drive the images are on and then drill down until you select the folder you want.

The photos in the folder and sub folders will show up in the middle area.

In the right pane you can Click the "Do Not Import Suspected Duplicates".

WARNING: At the very top it looks like this

Copy as DNG   Copy   Move   Add

Copy and Add are very different and using Add can cause big trouble. Using add with a folder will add the photos in the folder to the Database with Thumbnail views but the ORIGINAL files LR needs will remain in the Folder you selected. If you delete that folder you will not be able to Edit or Print the pictures as the originals will be gone. Move would move the pictures into the location you specify in the right pane under "File Handling" and copy will make "Copies". Add works only if you have the folder where you want it along with your other images.

Hi Francis

Hope you dried out by now from last Wednesday...My question is:  Does LR 3 Import whole FOLDERS and how do I do this?

Comment by Francis G Dorsemaine on July 2, 2013 at 9:29pm

It's your choice, the imported pictures will come flagged with the LR version you used. Then it's your choice whether you want to use the new features or not.

Do files imported from earlier versions look different in L5? Or will the adjustments in the earlier versions of LR remain unless you choose to update the adjustments?

Karoline, you can choose whatever method you like best. You can also import partial catalogs too if you previously export them from LR3.6.

Thanks for the encouragement, will upgrade. Should I import the latest catalog from the old Lightroom or do you start a new catalog with the new one?

4 was well worth upgrade. 5.0 is a huge leap forward. With LR my trips to PS were down to about 5%, now they may come down to 1-2%. You can use the trial for 30 days (it runs besides previous versions) to make your decision.

Any opinions on LIghtroom 5? I have 3.6 at the moment. Is it time to upgrade?
